Reiki & Energy Healing
A Beginner's Guide
When people first hear the word "Reiki," they often picture something mysterious - maybe someone hovering their hands over a person lying on a table, or a scene straight out of a wellness movie. I get it. Before I found Reiki, I had those same images in my head and honestly, a fair bit of scepticism too.
But here I am, years later, a certified Reiki master and teacher because once I experienced what Reiki truly is, there was no going back.
So let me break it down for you, simply and honestly.
What Does "Reiki" Actually Mean?
Reiki is a Japanese healing technique. The word itself comes from two Japanese words: Rei, meaning universal or divine, and Ki, meaning life force energy. So Reiki, at its core, means "Universal Life Force Energy."
The idea is that there is a subtle energy that flows through all living beings. When that energy flows freely and is balanced, we feel well not just physically but emotionally and mentally as well. When it gets blocked or disrupted (through stress, trauma, grief, illness or just the chaos of daily life), we start to feel off. Tired, anxious, stuck or unwell.
Reiki works by channelling healing energy to where it's needed, helping to restore that natural flow.
What Happens in a Full Body Reiki Session?
You lie down fully clothed, usually on a massage table, in a calm and comfortable space. As a Reiki healer, I gently place my hands on or just above different areas of your body - your head, shoulders, heart, abdomen - moving through specific positions.
There's no pressure, no manipulation. Just intentional, gentle touch and the channelling of energy.
Most people describe feeling deeply relaxed during a session, sometimes so relaxed they drift off. Others feel warmth, gentle tingling or a sense of emotional release. Some see colours. Some simply feel a quiet peace they haven't felt in a long time.
Every experience is unique. And all of it is valid.
Is It a Religious Practice?
This is one of the most common questions I get. Reiki is not tied to any religion. It's a spiritual practice in the sense that it works with energy and intention, but it is open to people of all faiths, backgrounds and beliefs.
I've worked with deeply religious clients, agnostics and total sceptics. Reiki meets everyone where they are.
What Can Reiki Help With?
While Reiki is not a medical treatment and should always complement (not replace) professional medical care, many people find it deeply supportive for stress and anxiety, emotional overwhelm, sleep issues, physical pain and tension, grief and loss, burnout and general feelings of being stuck or disconnected from themselves.
For me personally, Reiki was the first thing that helped me feel truly at home in my own body. That's why I do this work and why I love introducing it to people who are just beginning to explore energy healing.
